My Others Short Story
THE REASON
The
darkness of night still bears witness to his silence. I did not hear his murmur
or his whisper. He was silent. I was still staring at his back wrapped in a
dark shirt, standing busy looked for something on his desk. I kept waiting for his
answer. Waiting for his confession. Waiting for his explanation. He just turned
his back on me. Ignore me. For the umpteenth time I asked him this simple question;
why he married me. He just can say because he loves me, that's all but he just
kept quiet as if he didn’t listen to me.
We
have been married for 3 years. There wasn’t a big problem in our relationship
actually. But these past few months I've been agitated by this doubt. This
question came to my mind when I attended the wedding of one of my best friends.
The reason they married was not that they love each other but they need each
other in the business world. Were we just like them? But I'm not rich, for the job
we are very different I'm a doctor while He's a cinematographer. Love? maybe
yes but why he’s so hard to say it.
Without
another word I stepped my legs out of the white house. I left him, was busy
with his IMAC and DSLR. With a pretty high speed of my range rover. I also didn’t know where
the direction of my true direction. I was angry and disappointed. I also cried
a moment, soon my cell phone rang. Mother called. Immediately I took a deep
breath. Set my breath. I’ve never told her about my household. I didn’t know
just my feelings alone or that's the reality, Andrew was just behaving in front
of the mother like there’s no quarrel in our household
"Hello
mom?"
"Where
are you?"
"I'm
in the supermarket near the house. What’s going on? "
"Overnight
at home tonight, Jonathan asked for help to work on his scripts"
"Okay
mom, I'll go there now"
I
look at my iPhone screen, my wedding
photos with Andrew. I took a heavy breath and headed for the mother's house. I
saw a house filled with plants. My mother loves gardening. This’s where I grew up.
Spending time with my dad. Played together. Immediately I stepped my foot into
the house. I cannot stand on a cold night. No one was awake. I approached
Jonathan's room, because I remember he wanted to ask my help to make his
scripts. I opened the bedroom door, He was also sleeping with a pile of papers
and books.
"Have
you come?" someone whispered behind me
"Mom...?!"
I said a little surprised. I closed the gray door. I followed the footstep of
the mother to the family room. He gave me a glass of mineral water
"Are
you okay?" she asked. I just stared at the peach-colored wall. Lots of
photos hanging on the wall. Photos of my family; my little picture with Jonathan,
my graduation photo, my wedding photo with Andrew, he was very handsome with my
father at the hospital at that time. Unfathomable, it’s been three years he
left us happily. And countless too the same question that I always ask to
Andrew
"Jesy,
that's enough for this anxiety. If there any anything, tell me" she bargained.
I just shook my head. I didn’t want her to be worried about my situation with
Andrew
"It's
okay, Mom. I am alright. Maybe I'm just tired "I lied from the faded yellow
chair
"Do
you doubt about Andrew?" My footsteps to leave her were stopped
immediately. I still stood
"Come
with me" she asked me and led me to her room. I sat on her white bed still
in silence. She caught up with a wooden cigarette spot. I knew that spot. That belongs to Andrew! That's right Andrew's spot of cigarette. I have not
seen it for a long time. Last time I saw as he waited for the doctor's father
after the surgery, as I recall.
"Jesy,
all this time I kept this thing. I should throw it away but I cannot because
this is the silent witness of Andrew and your Dad. How long have Andrew not
smoked? "She asked me
"Why
Mom? I don’t know maybe from our wedding day as I remember, because after that
I don’t remember him smoke again or I do not know that he smokes behind me
" replied her
"No.
One day before your wedding day "
"Then
..."
"Andrew
gave this thing to me and told me to throw it away. You know why? "
"Maybe
he wants to buy a new one"
"No,
because he wants to fulfill his ability to your father"
"It
means ......"
"You
know your Dad died of lung cancer thrown out by a cigarette, right? "
"Yes….
"
"That's
what your father is afraid of. It was the night before your wedding day father
called Mom and Andrew to talk. He says that he asks Andrew to always be by your
side in joy and sorrow. And always take care of you, do not let him leave first
before you. He must stay healthy to keep accompanying you until the end of your
life "
"..."
"Hearing
your dad's request Andrew also asked for permission to marry you the next day
and decide to quit smoking, so he can always take care of you and accompany
until the end of your life, and your dad also calm when he must leave us.
Because he knows there is a man who will continue his duty to look after his
beautiful daughter
My
tears just flowed
"Mom
says it's, not because Andrew asked me but I know that you've been agitated by
doubts about the reason why he married you. Mom heard your question to him when I stayed
at your house at that moment. This is the answer, the reason why he married you,
he can take care of you until the trails grew you
I
am also crying in my mom's arms. The phone rang I saw a call from Andrew, I
answered immediately
"I
Love you, Andrew, Thank you ..." I said
